ANSWER PAGE FOR : Hey, you thought 6th grade Math was hard? Try these problems (if you dare).

Labeled rectangles

1. From the diagram above, here’s how you can count all the rectangles:
#1-4 — There are four rectangles with numbers in them.
#5 — All the rectangles together make the fifth rectangle.
#6 — Rectangles 1 and 2 together make a skinny rectangle.
#7 — Rectangles 3 and 4 together make a skinny rectangle.
#8 — Rectangles 1 and 3 together make a rectangle on the left.
#9 — Rectangles 2 and 4 together make a rectangle on the right.

SO THE ANSWER IS C.

2. Here’s how the hint worked. There were 4 teams in the Final Four and it took 3 games to eliminate three of the teams. That got us down to one: the champion. See, one team gets eliminated every game. When you think about it, that’s obvious. You need 3 games to get 4 teams down to 1. So if there are 68 teams, that means you need 67 games to get the 68 teams down to 1.

SO THE ANSWER IS D.

3.

handshakes 1
Person #1 shakes 4 people’s hands, but person #2 already shook #1’s hand

For #3, you can use the diagram above for a start. See, the #1 guy has to shake everyone’s hand. That’s 4 handshakes. Now #2 also has to do the same, but #2 has already shaken #1’s hand, so he just needs to shake the hands of #3, #4, and #5.

So the pattern goes: 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 10 in all.
THE CORRECT ANSWER IS  D.

4. THE CORRECT ANSWER IS B.
You can have 3 quarters, 4 dimes, and 4 pennies and still not be able to give exact change for a dollar bill. That’s the highest you can go. (See, if you added in one more coin of any kind, then you could make exact change.)

5. This one is a killer (for me at least). But here’s the pattern:
We start with 0.
First we multiply by 2 and add 1. So we end up with 1.
Now we take that 1 and multiply by 2 and add 2. We end up with 4.
We take that 4 and multiply by 2 and add 3. We get 11.
We take that 11 and multiply by 2 and add 4. We get 26.
And if you take 26 and follow the same pattern, you will get 57.

THE CORRECT ANSWER IS C.

So how’d you do? Hey, if you got three right, that’s really good! And if you got 4 or 5 right, you’re better than me! And that’s something! Now get out there and test your friends or family. Show ’em who’s the boss when it comes to Math.
